July 6, 2018 - Mining added another 5,000 jobs in June, according to data released July 6 from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The increase continues an upward trend in mining employment. Since reaching a recent low in October 2016, the industry has added 95,000 jobs. The majority of the increase is in support activities for mining.

Specifically, support activities for mining increased by 4,300 for the month of June while jobs in oil and gas extraction decreased by just 200.

Some companies continue to announce staff reductions and close facilities, but it’s nowhere near the level of a few years ago during the industry downturn. In fact, during the recovery, there’s been an influx of hiring in areas such as the Permian as the industry experiences another shale boom.

The Dallas Fed’s most recent quarterly energy survey (which targets oil and gas professionals in E&P and oilfield services) revealed robust sector growth, a healthy labor market and growth in activity.
