China's NEV Charging Points Accelerate
November 23, 2020 - China's new energy vehicle (NEV) charging points reached 1.498mn by the end of October, up by 21pc from November 2019, according to a white paper released by stated-owned power transmission and supply firm State Grid.
This includes 667,000 public charging points and 831,000 private ones. The vehicle-to-charging point ratio in China increased from 7.84:1 in 2015 to 3.5:1 in 2019.
The increase in charging points reflect firm demand bolstered by rapid development in the country's NEV industry, which began to recover in this year's second quarter following the impact from the Covid-19 outbreak in the first quarter. This was supported by government stimulus measures to encourage the use and purchases of such vehicles.
China produced 167,000 NEVs in October, up by 69.7pc from a year earlier and by 22.8pc from September. October sales rose by 104.5pc from a year earlier to 160,000, according to data from China's automotive manufacturers association.
Most major cities in China have supportive policies to step up infrastructure construction for the NEV industry, including charging points. Shanghai has plans to add 100,000-200,000 public and private NEV charging areas over the next three years.
China's Hainan province is on target to have 30,000 NEVs in use and build more than 28,000 charging points this year.
