West Virginia Miner Killed in Accident Identified

 


November 7, 2025 - Governor Patrick Morrisey has identified the coal miner killed in an accident in Tucker County Thursday.

In a Facebook post, Gov. Morrisey said that Joey Mitchell Jr. was the miner killed in the accident, adding that “all West Virginians should keep Joey’s family, friends, and fellow miners in our thoughts and prayers.”

“Our coal miners are among the hardest-working and most courageous people in our state. They represent the strength, humility, and resolve that define West Virginia. We owe these men and women an enduring debt of gratitude for the sacrifices they make every day to power our communities and our nation,” Morrisey said.

One person is dead and another injured after a mining accident happened in Tucker County Thursday. 

Tucker County Ambulance Authority President Dennis Filler confirmed to media partners that the accident happened at the Mountain View Mine owned by Mettiki Coal. The mine is located along Route 48 northeast of Davis.

The accident happened around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6. Details regarding what kind of accident it was have not been released, but Filler confirmed that at least one person was killed and another was injured.
