Electric Power Monthly and Electricity Monthly Update—January 2023
January 26, 2023 - The January 2023 Electricity Monthly Update has been released with data for November 2022. The following are some highlights:
- Electricity demand in the California (CAISO) and Southern Company territories reached its lowest level in the past 12 months.
- Wholesale natural gas prices in New England, New York City, the mid-Atlantic, the Midwest, Texas, and the Southwest reached their lowest amounts in the past 12 months.
- Total average revenues per kilowatthour (kWh) rose by 11.8% from November 2021 to 12.46 cents/kWh in November 2022, and average revenues per kWh increased year over year in all four end-use sectors.
The report also includes a feature article about how residential retail choice participation leveled off in 2021, but participation rates vary by state.
We have released the January 2023 Electric Power Monthly with data for November 2022. The following are some highlights:
- Net generation in the United States rose 2.8% from November 2021.
- Consumption of natural gas for power generation was up 4.2% compared with November 2021.
- The average residential retail price of electricity was up 11.2% from November 2021.
