Penn State University Mine Rescue Student Training Needs Funds

By Jim Boyd

May 23, 2017 - This spring I attended the Mineral Industries Spring Recognition Banquet for students and faculty with host Dr. Jeffery Kohler. We were able to follow up on his excellent progress of reinvigorating the Mining Engineering Department.

A deficiency that was discussed with many individuals that day and evening was their worn out mine rescue training apparatus. Please click here for a detailed memo on this.

Jeff reports that “our current equipment is being held together with baling wire and duct tape, and our greatest need is to replace everything from the face masks to the communications gear. Our estimated cost to outfit the ‘A’ with new, i.e. functional gear is $85,000, and we are working to raise that amount. The old equipment will be saved and to the extent possible, used to outfit some members of our second team (the ‘B’ team).”

Those wishing to contribute money to the PSU Mining Department needs can talk with Jeff or simply as follows:

                Mail Checks To:

                                Ms. Rachel Conaway

Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering

                                Penn State University

                                155 Hosler Bldg

                                University Park, PA 16802

The checks should be made out to Penn State Mining Program; and then either with an enclosed note or using the memo line of the check, designate the money to Mine Rescue Team.
