Hatfield McCoy Museum Opens May 26 in Williamson, West Virginia

May 25, 2017 - On the fifth anniversary of the History Channel’s Hatfields and McCoys miniseres you can finally see some of the actual artifacts and documents from the feud. The Hatfield McCoy Country Museum opens on May 26th and features the largest collection of original Hatfield McCoy items anywhere on earth. The Hatfields and McCoys starring Kevin Costner introduced a whole new generation to the story of America’s most famous feud and now for the first time many of the original items from feud are available for the public to see.

The brand new Hatfield McCoy Country Museum features the burial records for Devil Anse, Johnse, Cap and Levicy Hatfield; the deed for the contested 5,000 acres of land that some believe started the Feud; pieces of Randall McCoy’s cabin that was burned down by the Hatfields; bullets actually fired during the feud; a gun found at the site of the conflict’s climactic battle – The Battle of Grapevine Creek; arrest warrants for the Hatfields and more.

The museum also contains the Bee Ward Coleman collection – one of the richest collections of coal mining artifacts on display anywhere. Other key holdings include the not-guilty verdict for Sid Hatfield in his trial for the Matewan Massacre shootout. This document caused the largest battle in America since the Civil War. The museum also contains a scrip making machine that was owned by Henry Ford. Items in the museum have been featured on American Pickers, the History Channel and Antiques Roadshow.

There are informational displays about the Hatfield McCoy Feud, the Industrial Revolution and coal heritage. The museum is located in the heart of Hatfield McCoy country and those visiting can also plan to see the nearby sites of the world’s most famous feud. Other museum attractions include the interior of a 1920s coal camp house, the Underground Theater that will make you feel like you’re inside of a coal mine and other items related to mountain heritage and history.

The museum also features weekly guided tours by one of the world’s foremost feud experts, Bill Richardson. Professor Richardson has appeared on American Pickers, CBS This Morning, The History Channel, the Discovery Channel, NatGeo, NPRs All Things Considered and many others. He has been quoted in the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, the London Times and dozens of other national newspapers.
