March 14, 2018 - Peabody Energy controlled an estimated 5.2 billion short tons of proven and probable coal reserves as of December 31, 2017 – with 500Mt of that in Australia.

Approximately 51% of its Australian proven and probable coal reserves, or 282Mt, are metallurgical coal, comprised of approximately 151Mt and 131Mt of coking coal and low volatility pulverised coal injection coals, respectively.

The remainder of its Australian coal reserves consists of thermal coal, the company said in its annual statement.

“We own approximately 30% of these reserves and leased property comprises the remaining 70%,” Peabody said.

“Approximately 63% of our reserves, or 3.3 billion tons, are compliance coal and 37% are non-compliance coal.”

Compliance coal is defined as coal having sulphur dioxide content of 1.2 pounds or less per million British thermal units.

Electricity generators can use coal that exceeds these specifications by using emissions reduction technology, using emission allowance credits or blending higher sulfur coal with lower sulphur coal.
