EPA to Hold Info Session on Ohio's Johnson Run Mine

May 4, 2018 - An information session to discuss a draft wastewater discharge permit for the proposed Johnson Run coal mine in Trimble Township, Ohio will be held by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency this coming Monday, May 7.

It will be held at Burr Oak Lodge & Conference Center near Glouster, starting a 6 p.m.

Ohio EPA representatives will provide an update about the draft permit and will respond to comments received during the public comment period.

Representatives from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources will also be available to provide an update on the mining permit it is considering and respond to questions.

The permit applicant is Oxford Mining Co., which is proposing to surface mine 36 acres of the 300-acre site, with additional coal to be removed through auger/highwall mining.

If approved, the EPA permit would allow the surface mine to discharge to Johnson Run. The discharge would come from treatment ponds which collect runoff and groundwater from the affected area.
