Coal City Tribute Will Honor Past, Present Veterans

May 21, 2019 - In West Virginia, this Memorial Day, May 27, at 10 a.m., Coal City Veterans Memorial Committee and Sophia VFW Post 4326 will join to host its 15th annual community ceremony to honor all veterans.

The ceremony, led by VFW Post Commander Melinda Couburn, will be held in front of the former Stoco High School. Before and after the tribute, the community can look at war memorabilia, such as military jeeps and historical guns, brought in by the Raleigh County Veterans Museum.

“West Virginia is one of the states that sent out the highest number of military from the state out,” said Cindy Parker, director of the Raleigh County Veterans Museum. “So, we’re rich in history with our West Virginia veterans.”

Parker explained the importance of community Memorial Day celebrations.

“You know, they sacrificed so much,” Parker said. “It’s up to us to continue their history, their legacy. Some didn’t make it home. It’s an honor for us, no matter if a veteran was in combat, or served abroad or here at home.”

If the weather permits, the VA Hospital has agreed to bring some of their veterans to the ceremony.

A lunch of sandwiches, drinks and desserts will follow the ceremony, provided by the Coal City Community Center.
