Worst-Case Scenario Ice Melt Study Debunked

February 2, 2021
- Global warming campaigners regularly push ice melt scares.

A case in point happened just this past week when they rolled out an alarmist study published in the European Geophysical Union’s journal the Cryosphere. In it they claimed, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, "Between 1994 and 2017, the Earth lost 28 trillion metric tons of ice...an amount roughly equivalent to a sheet of ice 100 meters thick covering the state of Michigan…"

The report principally focused on Antarctica and Greenland. As in the past, the Greens claim if there is too much melting in these locations, many of our coastlines will be underwater – especially in Florida.

If you believe this, we have a solution: Let us take your Florida beachfront property off your hands -- at a big discount, of course!

The tactic here, according to data analyst Paul Homewood of the Global Warming Policy Foundation, is to omit any historical context that might quell the alarmism. Melting in Greenland has been going on for centuries. What we’re seeing today doesn’t seem particularly abnormal to many scientists, especially given that sea level rise hasn’t accelerated.

But don't hold your (CO2-laden) breath waiting for the media to undertake any serious critical examination of these facts!

Check out Paul Homewood's reality check at CFACT's Climate Depot:

Greenland’s ice mass loss is just a part of the post-Little Ice Age trend. It has actually decelerated in the last decade, and comparison with the 1990s needs to acknowledge the fact that temperatures there fell sharply between the 1950s and 90s. Most of all, the effect on sea-level rise is tiny, just 10mm since 2000. As for Antarctica, scientists still can’t agree whether the ice cap is increasing or getting smaller.

The proof of the pudding, of course, is in the sea-level rise. And when we look at long-running tidal gauge records, it is painfully obvious that nothing at all unusual is happening – merely a continuation of the slow rise which began in the late 19thC.

LIsten to CFACT's Marc Morano with ace forecaster Joe Bastardi on Sean Hannity's radio show.  They skewer these kind of false climate narratives with a special emphasis on dangerous efforts to apply COVID-19 shutdown tactics to global warming.

This is where the free speech issues become so crucial.  The Left doesn't fear false information, they fear hard, provable data that disproves their propaganda.
