February 17, 2021 - It’s become an annual occurrence for travelers along Interstate 70 at the West Virginia-Pennsylvania state line to encounter single-lane traffic and orange barrels as part of Tunnel Ridge LLC’s longwall mining project.

The work is starting up again this month, and will last for a several weeks as crews slice away a seam of coal from a panel locateddeep beneath I-70.

This is the third winter for the work, which is expected to last several more years. There have been no major issues following the mining.

To the traveling public, use caution and exercise patience through the area, as speeds will be reduced and, as the weather warms, more vehicles will be hitting the highways.
