Q1 2022 METALLURGICAL COAL FACTS RELEASED

U.S. Production

 

Met coal production is on the rise! In Central Appalachia, coal production increased by 7.6% YoY from Q121 to Q122. West Virginia generally accounts for roughly forty percent of all metallurgical coal produced in the entire United States. State-by-state breakdowns are as follows:

 

West Virginia: 40% Metallurgical, 60% Steam

Virginia: 85% Metallurgical, 15% Steam

Kentucky: 10% Metallurgical, 90% Steam

Pennsylvania: 20% Metallurgical, 80% Steam

Alabama: 75% Metallurgical, 25% Steam

U.S. Exports

American metallurgical coal makes the steel used in projects all across the world. Average quarterly met coal exports over the last year have risen to 11.3 million tons - up from a low of 9.1 million tons during Q2 of 2020 in the midst of the pandemic.

 

The largest export destinations for Q1 of 2022 include India (1.9 million tons), Netherlands (1.3mT), Brazil (1.2mT) and Japan (1.1mT). Overall, 40% of all met coal exports were sent to Europe while 37% were sent to Asia.
