December 6, 2022 - AES Indiana will stop burning coal by the end of 2025 and increase its investments in carbon-free resources under an integrated resource plan filed with Indiana regulators.

The AES Corp. utility subsidiary on Dec. 1 filed a petition with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission that outlines plans to add up to 1,300 MW of wind, solar and battery storage to its portfolio over the next five years while converting two units at its 1,507-MW Petersburg coal-fired power plant to run on natural gas. AES Indiana, rebranded from Indianapolis Power & Light Co., said in December 2019 that it would shut down Petersburg units 1 and 2 in 2021 and 2023, respectively. The integrated resource plan, or IRP, calls for converting remaining units 3 and 4 at the power plant in Pike County, Ind.

AES Indiana said it also plans to monitor new technologies such as green hydrogen, small modular nuclear reactors and carbon capture as part of future resource planning beginning with its 2025 IRP.

The 2022 IRP provides a 20-year outlook of resources needed to serve AES Indiana's 512,000 customers.
