SME Updates Study Guide for Aspiring Professional Engineers
April 25, 2025 - The Study Guide for the Professional Licensure of Mining and Mineral Processing Engineers is an aid for individuals applying and preparing for a state Mining and Mineral Processing (MMP) Professional Engineer (PE) examination. Now in its 9th edition, this title is a trusted resource in the field, where it is increasingly common for companies to strongly encourage or require licensure as a professional engineer.
The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) supports and encourages mining and mineral industry engineers to seek professional licensure.

By using this study guide, aspiring licensed PEs can read what licensing can do for them, learn about the engineering licensure process, find a summary on the application process, and see test-taking strategies specific to the PE exam. This comes in addition to a comprehensive practice exam written by engineers who have passed the PE exam.
“SME invests a significant amount of resources into cultivating a robust pipeline of licensed PEs equipped with the credentials and knowledge to employ the best possible practices including safety, ethics and overall expertise,” said Kori Darby, PE and current Chair of the SME PE Committee. “Publishing a new edition of the study guide is an important facet of our overall strategy to provide individuals and the industry at large with the best tools towards obtaining PE licensure.”
A chapter on ethics for professional engineers detailing the rules of professional conduct is also included, courtesy of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), the organization whose members comprise the engineering and surveying licensure boards from 50 states, the District of Columbia and four U.S. territories.
The Study Guide for the Professional Licensure of Mining and Mineral Processing Engineers, 9th edition is available in both print and eBook formats. Special pricing is provided to SME members, as well as to students.
