UK: Yorkshire Mining Museum Halts Underground Tours After Emergency


 


June 23, 2025 - A Wakefield coal mining museum has halted its underground tours after emergency services attended.


Emergency services attended the National Coal Mining Museum for England, in Overton, at 3.22pm on Friday afternoon, June 20. Photos posted online showed ambulances and fire engines at the museum.


The museum issued a statement stating that tours had been paused over the weekend due to 'a minor technical issue with our back-up generator'. The underground tours have been paused over Saturday and Sunday.


A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 3.22pm on Friday 20 June, to the National Coal Mining Museum as a precaution and one ambulance and our Hazardous Area Response team attended. However, we were not required and no patients were treated."


The National Coal Mining Museum issued the following statement, it said: "Important Update – Underground Tours Temporarily Paused This Weekend. We’re very sorry, but due to a minor technical issue with our back-up generator, our Underground Tours will be paused this weekend.


"There will be no Underground Tours on Saturday 21 June and Sunday 22 June. If you’ve already purchased a ticket, please check your email for further details."


Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and Yorkshire Ambulance Service has been asked for a comment.
