More Coal-Related Job Cuts Coming In August, West Virginia Learns
June 26, 2025 - Nearly 300 coal-related jobs in southern West Virginia will be eliminated by early August.
Civil LLC of Beckley told state officials earlier this month that it was cutting 279 workers at nine coal processing and transportation facilities across five counties within 60 days.
The largest group of workers, 155, are at the CV2 mine in Fayette County and another 20 at an adjacent prep plant.
Civil will also close its Delbarton Prep Plant in Mingo County, with 44 workers, and the Eagle Energy mine in Fayette County, with 33 workers.
Civil notified Kentucky officials earlier this month that 32 jobs would be cut at truck, engineering and mechanical shops in three eastern Kentucky counties in August.
Civil’s layoff notices follow Core Natural Resources’ announcement of 200 layoffs at its Itmann Mine No. 5 and Itmann Coal Preparation Plant in Wyoming County.
Now, nearly 500 coal-related workers will be out of a job in southern West Virginia by August.
In April, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to boost coal production and use.
In a statement, Gov. Patrick Morrisey called the job cuts “painful.”
“The hard-working men and women of our coal industry have powered our state and nation for generations, and my administration is committed to utilizing our vast energy resources to retain and attract good-paying jobs to West Virginia,” he said. “We will keep pushing to get as many of these folks back to work as quickly as possible.”
