Trump to Give Coal Country $725 Million to Clean Abandoned Mines
June 27, 2025 - The Interior Department announced $725 million on Friday to struggling communities in Appalachia and other states to clean up abandoned coal mines and boost their economies.
Twenty-two states and the Navajo Nation will receive the fiscal 2025 money, including $244.8 million for Pennsylvania, $140.7 million for West Virginia, and $75.7 million for Illinois.
President Donald Trump has vowed to resuscitate the dying coal industry. Congressional Democrats and Republicans for years have sought funding to clean up abandoned coal mines throughout the country and provide more economic opportunities for traditional fossil fuel communities.
