Wyoming Cowboys to Wear Coal Inspired Uniforms for ‘Border War’ Game

October 15, 2025 - The jerseys and pants both appear stripeless.

Oh, and there was a quick cut showing a player holding a “lightsaber” — which was actually one of the better non sequiturs I’ve ever seen for a reveal video honoring the coal industry.

Speaking of the coal industry — which these uniforms seek to honor — the Cowboys will have several members of the mining industry lead the team onto the field before the game starts. Current and former miners will also be recognized throughout the game.

“The partnership with the Wyoming Mining Association is something that is special, as the coal mining industry is such an important part of the culture of Wyoming,” said Tom Burman, Wyoming’s Director of Athletics. “We are honored to celebrate the great men and women of the coal industry and have the opportunity to show how Cowboy Tough is a way of life and not just a saying.”

“The Wyoming Mining Association is proud to partner with the Wyoming Cowboys to recognize and honor the hard-working men and women of our state’s vital coal industry,” said Travis Deti (Executive Director of the Wyoming Mining Association). “Coal has been there for Wyoming from the beginning, building our state, communities, highways and roads, schools and community colleges, and the University of Wyoming. We are One Wyoming.”

As SMUW’s Terry Duroncelet is fond of saying, “It’s Spooky Season,” and he feels that October/November are the most appropriate times for schools to break out their black alternates. So this reveal and game date fit the spooky season motif.

While uniforms like this are the very definition of BFBS (Black For Black’s Sake), I recognize these kinds of alternates aren’t designed with my tastes in mind. I’m sure the players and fans will love what amounts to a “blackout,” and if they can use the tie-in to the state’s coal mining industry as “inspiration” for the uniform, then more power to them.

I don’t love the uniform (from what we can see), as there isn’t much about it that says “Wyoming” to me — the script Wyoming being used is not new: it’s been worn before, including on a new(er) gold alternate jersey introduced in 2024. I’m not a fan, especially when the Cowboys have a very nice wordmark in their western font.

The 117th (and final?) meeting between these two long-time rivals is slated for 7:30 pm (ET) on October 25th, and will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
