Australia: Rescue Mission Continues After Mammoth Roof Collapse

January 4, 2026 - In Australia, emergency response teams are working to recover a man after a reported roof collapse at the Mammoth underground coal mine, about 10km north of Blackwater.

The incident happened about 3pm yesterday, with initial reports from emergency services indicating one man had been treated for non-life-threatening injuries while another remained unaccounted for.

Site operator Mammoth Underground Coal Management said mining activities had been suspended until further notice.

A company spokesman said this morning that emergency response teams, in coordination with relevant authorities, were undertaking response and recovery activities on site.

“The safety of our colleague is our first priority and we are making every effort to secure the site and ensure it is safe to commence rescue efforts,” he said.

“Workplace support has also been made available to all Mammoth personnel who may have been affected by the incident.”

Acting Natural Resources and Mines Minister Tony Perrett said emergency crews, including the Queensland Mines Rescue Service, were on site and doing everything possible to rescue the worker.

“My thoughts are with all of those involved, their loved ones, and the entire mining community,” he said.

Resources Safety and Health Queensland is among those responding to the incident and said its current focus was on supporting efforts to recover the worker who remained underground.

The Mammoth coal mine is part of the Curragh complex owned by Coronado Global Resources and produced first coal in December 2024.

The Curragh complex was the site of the 2021 death of Clark Peadon, who was fatally injured while performing cable relocation work on a dragline.

A Coal Inspectorate report on the incident shortly after said it appeared he either re-entered or remained in the operational swing boundary after the dragline became operational.

Coronado Curragh was fined $80,000 in Rockhampton Magistrates Court in October and hit with court costs of $28,572.78 over that incident. No conviction was recorded.

Donald Rabbitt, an employee of contractor Thiess, was killed during a tyre change activity in the main workshop at the Curragh mine in January 2020. In 2010, contractor James Brunswick was killed in a vehicle rollover at the Curragh complex.
