The Diaries of Sir George Dowty

January 11, 2026 - The Diaries of Sir George Dowty, the British industrialist credited in introducing the first hydraulic props underground to support the roof during mining, are in great demand particularly with libraries and history societies around the world.

Sir George was a hands-on engineer with a vision for the future and made his last underground mine visit in the USA in February 1975, passing away the following December. The late Matt Spedding the longtime President of Dowty Corporation headquartered in Zelienople, PA thought a great deal of Sir George.

This photo was taken at a British National Coal Board (NCB) press conference on Automation in the Mines and shows Sir George next to the long serving NCB Chairman Lord Robens. Sir George was highly respected by the NCB.

Viscount Adrian Buckmaster recalls: "Matt felt Sir George understood his customers and his business. He would be happy to eat a very simple lunch with the mine manager after going underground to see his roof supports, still in his coveralls, in dusty surroundings in an office trailer deep in Appalachia".

The book on the diaries is edited by Sir George Dowty's last secretary and contains summaries of the diaries he kept covering the years 1919 until 1975. It is a most fitting accompaniment to his statue, which was erected in England 18 months ago.

Copies of this hard-backed book cost $25.00 including postage and can be obtained by emailing martinrobins@btinternet.com.
