Virginia Congressman Defends Appalachian Coal in House Committee Debate
January 23, 2026 - Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) opposed a Democratic amendment during House Committee on Energy and Commerce debate Wednesday, January 21, 2026, that would have prevented manufacturers from making efficiency upgrades at facilities using coal-generated electricity.
House Republicans defeated the amendment 28-23, and the full committee voted to advance Griffith’s New Source Review Permitting Improvement Act (H.R. 161). The bill allows American manufacturers to make efficiency upgrades to their facilities and power plants.
The bill has support from the United Mine Workers of America, the National Mining Association and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
