Hundreds of Mine Workers to be Laid Off at Several West Virginia Operations
February 16, 2026 - A mine operator has announced plans to idle more than a half-dozen operations in West Virginia and permanently lay off more than 500 workers.
Greenbrier Minerals LLC issued a WARN notice Friday announcing the layoffs of 530 employees beginning April 14. According to the notice, the layoffs will be permanent.
The impacted operations include mines and prep plants in Logan and Wyoming counties:
- Toney Fork Surface Mine in Lorado
- Elk Lick Loadout in Lorado
- Powellton No. 1 Mine in Lorado
- Saunders Prep Plant in Lorado
- Lower War Eagle No. 1 Mine in Cyclone
- Muddy Bridge Mine in Davin
- Eagle No. 1 Mine in Lorado
Employees at the company’s administrative offices in Lyburn, W.Va., were also included in the notice.
Greenbrier Minerals, which is controlled by Coronado Global Resources, cited “adverse market conditions” as its reason for the layoffs.
The announcement comes a little more than two weeks after a WARN notice was issued for about 200 workers at Mettiki Coal’s Mountain View Mine in Tucker County. Those layoffs are expected to begin April 1 when that mine closes.
The layoff notice also comes a day after President Donald Trump announced new policies and plans to pump millions of dollars into three West Virginia coal-fired power plants to keep them operating.
