Graduate student Zoe Brooks grew up surrounded by the culture and legacy of coal mining in Southwest Virginia.

Now studying history at Virginia Tech, Brooks researches Appalachian labor and carceral history while working in Special Collections and University Archives.

Through projects like processing the Pittston map collection, her work helps preserve the places, labor, and communities that shaped coal country.
