WorkForce West Virginia Hosts Job Fair After Mettiki Coal Layoffs

March 19, 2026 - WorkForce West Virginia held an employment and resource fair in Davis.

The fair was held for all workers from Mettiki Coal, their spouses, and other secondary companies affected by the layoffs.

Their Mountain View Mine is closing and was a significant employer for the town.

Mayor Alan Tomson shared a response stating: This is more than an economic setback; it is a human tragedy. The entire community feels this loss, and there is a shared sense of grief and concern for neighbors and friends who are hurting.

Organizers of the job fair say they want to help those displaced by the closure.

“When you lose your job, your livelihood, what’s next? Especially if you’ve been working somewhere for 20 years. It’s scary for any of us. So, our goal is to try to make them feel at least a little bit more comfortable and that they’re not alone,” Maureen Persons director with Employment Services Division through WorkForce West Virginia said.

Many people came out to the fair held at the National Youth Science Academy from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. as well as employers who were there to let the attendees know there are jobs still accessible to them.

“Really, we just want to make sure that they know what career opportunities are available to them and that they don’t have to leave home to go find work, that there’s good jobs available right here,” Kyle Kull, organizer with the Laborers’ International Union of North America.

The fair also offered assistance creating a resume, interviewing, and training.

Overall, organizers say they want to make sure those affected know that their assistance will continue beyond the job fair held today.

“So, follow-up is important just as much as us having this event today. We still need to help them move forward after today. If there’s anything that they need to know, they should visit their local WorkForce West Virginia office and we can refer them to partners. We can help them with their job search,” Persons said.
