Abraham Chahuan: Trust is Key to Unlocking Large-Scale Mining Investments

March 21, 2026 - Trust is the decisive factor in enabling investment and accelerating the development of mining projects, particularly in a context of rising demand for critical minerals. This was stated by Abraham Chahuan, President of the World Mining Congress (WMC) 2026, who emphasized that the industry faces the challenge of aligning companies, governments, and communities under clear rules and shared objectives.

“Those looking to invest their capital seek the best conditions in terms of speed, efficiency, and legal certainty. This is an issue for discussion, and I believe many countries have competitive advantages and will be part of the debate at the Congress,” he said in an interview with ProActivo magazine.

A Roadmap for the Sector

Chahuan explained that this vision is reflected in the three pillars guiding WMC 2026: Trust, Technology, and Transformation, strategic axes for the future of the mining industry.

First, Trust is the enabler of all investment and development. “As in any relationship, trust takes time and is built not only on results but also on consistent interaction over time. It is something that is developed, where a given word is honored and fulfilled,” he noted, highlighting its role in building effective governance.

Second, Technology is presented as the driving force that enables the industry to operate more efficiently and sustainably. Technological advances have made it possible, for example, to profitably operate copper deposits with grades as low as 0.18%, something that decades ago seemed unachievable.

Finally, Transformation reflects the structural changes the mining sector is undergoing to adapt to new environmental, social, and economic demands. Chahuan highlighted the circular economy as a key initiative, particularly in the reprocessing of tailings and the continuous improvement of operational standards.

Together, these three pillars aim to address a broader challenge: how to produce more minerals, in less time, in a responsible manner, and with shared benefits.

In this context, the World Mining Congress 2026, to be held from June 24 to 26 at the Lima Convention Center, will bring together business leaders, experts, and representatives from the global mining industry to discuss the future of mining under this strategic vision.
