Last night President Trump signed a Presidential Proclamation using the Defense Production Act to secure coal Supply Chains and support affordable and reliable Baseload Power Generation Capacity. The action will allow the administration make the necessary purchases, commitments and financial instruments to support coal supply chains and baseload power generation, including coal mining, rail and barge logistics, export and domestic terminals, generating unit availability and life-extension work, on-site stockpiles, and more.
The Wall Street Journal writes an editorial applauding last week’s senate action passing representative Stauber’s congressional review act resolution, reversing the Biden era Minnesota land withdrawal. The piece says, “Expanding domestic critical mineral development ought to be a bipartisan cause as China seeks to weaponize its control of the supply chain.” It closes with this plea to Congress: “Now, on to permitting reform, please.”
Finally, the Trump administration is planning to hold the nation’s first-ever offshore mineral lease sales as early as this summer. The Marine Minerals Administration expects to hold offshore lease sales beginning this year, including in waters off of Alaska and Virginia. The administration is pushing to start deep-sea exploration and mining for mineral-rich nodules in both domestic and international waters.
