The Department of Energy is going nuclear. Yesterday DOE announced it is kicking off a new initiative to secure the nation’s nuclear fuel supply chain.

Through the Defense Production Act (DPA) Nuclear Fuel Cycle Consortium, the federal government will work with the domestic nuclear industry to ensure that the United States continues to have enough nuclear fuel to power the current nuclear reactor fleet as well as future advanced reactors.  In what it is calling the “Nuclear Dominance — 3 by 33” campaign, by 2033 it will: catalyze a secure and cost-competitive domestic fuel supply chain; accelerate advanced reactor deployment and explore how the DPA framework can be activated to support a nuclear build out.

The US and the European Union are expected today to sign a memorandum of understanding on for a partnership on critical minerals.

And leaving you with a fun fact for the weekend, China announced today it has discovered two new lunar minerals. Both minerals belong to the rare-earth phosphate category and lie hidden within the fine particles of lunar dust. The both also have names which I’m not going to attempt to pronounce, but they take the overall number of minerals discovered from the Moon to eight globally.
