Mining for Knowledge: Minerals A-Z

Tuesday, June 16, 2026 | 5:00–6:00 PM | $20 per login/attendee

The Museum's new Mining for Knowledge virtual lecture series continues on the third Tuesday of each month through October. The next installment introduces Minerals A–Z, the newest exhibit at the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum. After twelve months of curation, the Museum's largest gallery — over 1,600 square feet — has been transformed into an immersive exploration of Earth's mineral wealth.

Covering everything from crystal formation to mineral composition, Minerals A–Z brings science to life for learners of all ages. The presentation explores the vision and educational philosophy behind the exhibit, and how it deepens the Museum's mission to celebrate discovery, innovation, and the spirit of mining. Museum Curator David Rasch shares the passion and scholarship that went into selecting each specimen and crafting an experience that significantly elevates the Museum's scientific offerings.

Ideal for educators, geology enthusiasts, community groups, and curious minds of all kinds — Minerals A–Z and the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum offer an experience unlike any other.

Introducing the Junior Prospector Program?

Explorers can now embark on their own mining adventure with the Museum's brand-new Junior Prospector educational program! For an additional fee, visitors earn a badge by completing a series of activities across both the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum and the Matchless Mine Historic Site. From the Museum's immersive exhibits to the historic grounds of one of Leadville's most legendary silver mines, Junior Prospectors will dig into the science, history, and spirit of mining in a way that is as educational as it is unforgettable. It's the perfect complement to a visit — and a keepsake worth showing off.

New Exhibits Coming This Summer

The Museum is thrilled to debut two new exhibits this summer. Colorado 150 will shine a spotlight on Leadville's remarkable "firsts" — celebrating the city's outsized contributions to the state's history as Colorado marks this milestone anniversary. Additionally, a temporary traveling exhibit featuring the Climax Observatory will offer a rare and captivating look at this unique piece of Colorado's scientific and mining heritage. Both exhibits promise to deepen visitors' appreciation for the pivotal role Leadville and its mining community have played in shaping the state and the nation.

Try Your Hand at Gold Panning

Visitors can now try their hand at gold panning — included with paid museum admission. Whether you strike it rich or not, it's an experience the whole family will love.
