Eriez Highlights Flotation and Separation Innovations in Podcast Recorded at SME MINEXCHANGE

June 8, 2026 - Eriez®, a global leader in separation technologies, shared insights on evolving mineral processing challenges and emerging solutions during an industry podcast recorded at SME MINEXCHANGE in Salt Lake City.

During the discussion, Eriez technical and executive leaders outlined how mining companies face increasing pressure to improve recovery and throughput while managing tighter constraints on energy, water, and capital efficiency.

“We have new technologies that we’ve been working on for a long time that are now starting to hit their strides… we believe we have some step change technology,” said Jaisen Kohmuench, President and CEO of Eriez.

The conversation underscored the industry’s growing need to move beyond incremental improvements and adopt more transformative approaches to flowsheet design and equipment selection. Speakers highlighted that while innovation is essential, long-term success depends on integrating technologies across the entire process rather than relying on isolated solutions.

“These step change technologies are now just defining what the future flowsheets will look like,” said Todd Burchett, Head of Mining and Minerals at Eriez.

Participants also addressed ongoing recovery challenges across coarse, fine, and ultrafine particle ranges, particularly as ore bodies become more complex and head grades decline. Topics included coarse particle flotation and its impact on grind size, energy consumption, and tailings management, as well as technologies to improve selectivity and address circuit bottlenecks.

These capabilities were discussed in the context of Eriez technologies, including HydroFloat® coarse particle flotation and StackCell® systems, which support improved recovery across a broad range of particle sizes.

In addition to flotation advancements, the discussion explored developments in magnetic technologies and their operational benefits, including increased throughput and cost efficiencies. In one case study, a mining operation achieved a significant improvement in mill performance, increasing throughput from approximately 560 tons per hour to nearly 640 tons per hour, representing a 14% gain.

Speakers reiterated that successful innovation must remain closely aligned with real-world challenges and measurable outcomes.

“We can create a great product, but if we don’t have a market for it, or if we’re not providing a solution to a known issue, what’s the point?” Kohmuench said.

Throughout the discussion, Eriez stressed the importance of collaboration among operators, engineering firms, academia, and technology providers to accelerate the adoption of new solutions and enhance industry performance. The SME MINEXCHANGE setting provides an opportunity to share both technological developments and practical lessons from field applications and global partnerships.
