Mine Safety Agency Eliminates Rules for Underground Coal Mines

June 24, 2026 - The federal agency charged with ensuring the safety of America’s mining workforce is removing requirements for several of its standards in underground coal mines.

The US Mine Safety and Health Administration issued four final rules Wednesday that remove requirements for standards as part of broader Trump administration’s efforts to improve and eliminate regulations it deems outdated.

Some of the now-eliminated requirements include removing flame-resistance approval for conveyor belts used in underground coal mines, eliminating diesel particulate matter emission limits, and removing the use of flame safety lamps.
