Worker Dies in Accident at Warrior Met Coal Mine

July 3, 2026 - A 24-year-old man died July 1 after a workplace accident at Warrior Met Coal in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.

At around 6 p.m., a miner was found unresponsive underground at an active mine operated by Warrior Met Coal Inc. in the 22000 block of Alabama Highway 69 North in Berry. The miner was brought to the surface, but he did not survive, said Capt. Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit.

The coal miner was identified as Justin Calloway of Cordova.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit assumed command of the investigation.

Kennedy said investigators believe that the death was the result of a machinery accident while underground, and there is no reason to suspect any foul play right now.

The Violent Crimes Unit will be working with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences' Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the medical cause and manner of death, and with federal agencies, including the Mine Safety and Health Administration, as they investigate the miner's death.
