July 3, 2026 - There are currently no specific tariffs or quotas on anthracite coal. However, the Secretary of Commerce initiated a Section 232 investigation on June 29, 2026, into whether imports of such items threaten to impair national security. Comments from interested parties are due 14 days from publication in the Federal Register. This investigation includes products classified under HTSUS 2701.11.0000 and 2701.12.0010. The scope of the investigation is primarily focused on anthracite coal and metallurgical bituminous coal products that are considered critical materials for domestic steel production and industrial processes, including their role as derivative articles of steel for potential coverage under Section 232 tariffs. ST&R offers a three-pronged approach for avoiding, mitigating, and/or recovering these and other tariffs. For more information on which of these strategies might be most effective for your business, please contact ST&R. Official Documents
