July 5, 2026 - A miner was found unresponsive underground at an active mine in Alabama and later died after being brought to the surface, officials said. Justin Calloway, 24, was working in the Warrior Met Coal mine on Highway 69 North in Berry on July 1 when a machinery accident occurred, the Tuscaloosa County Violent Crimes Unit said.
The unit said it will work with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences-Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the medical cause and manner of death. Federal agencies, including the Mine Safety and Health Administration, are also investigating the incident.
As required by law, the company notified federal and state agencies, including the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and is cooperating with the agencies to conduct a thorough investigation.
