FirstEnergy Statement: Fort Martin
July 15, 2026 - Below is a message from Chris Hoenig, Sr. Communications Rep., External Communications, FirstEnergy:
Recent reports and social media commentary have circulated inaccurate information suggesting that West Virginia's Fort Martin Power Station will be closing. We want to be clear: those claims are false.
FirstEnergy and Mon Power remain committed to the Fort Martin Power Station and the employees who operate and support this critical facility. Fort Martin continues to play an important role in providing reliable, around-the-clock electricity for the region, and there are no plans to shut down the plant as part of the proposed generation expansion project.
The planned natural gas generation facility is intended to be an addition to our existing generation portfolio, not a replacement for Fort Martin's coal-fired operations. As energy demand continues to grow, particularly from manufacturing, economic development and emerging technologies, a diverse mix of generation resources is essential to maintaining a reliable and resilient electric grid.
