Coal Council Urges DOE to Support Coal Industry
July 22, 2026 - The National Coal Council urged the Department of Energy to provide financial support, including loan guarantees and grants, to bolster existing coal plants and facilitate the construction of new ones, thereby enhancing the overall competitiveness of the coal industry.
Infrastructure Investment: The council recommended that the U.S. government invest in coal infrastructure and enter power purchase agreements, which would improve market access for coal, particularly through additional export terminals aimed at Asian markets.
Regulatory Barrier Removal: The council also called for the elimination of regulatory and financial barriers to constructing new coal plants, aiming to accelerate project implementation and further drive the recovery of the coal sector.
Trump Administration Support: President Trump reinstated the National Coal Council last year, demonstrating support for the coal industry, with council members including executives from Peabody Energy, Warrior Met Coal, and Core Natural Resources, reflecting significant industry influence.
