July 24, 2026 - Two priority reports delivered this week by the National Coal Council to U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright could help shape an energy blueprint for West Virginia coal and future development.

The reports outline recommendations and actions aimed at guiding President Donald Trump’s energy policy by reducing regulatory, competitive and trade barriers. The council says this is limiting the U.S. coal industry’s potential in domestic and global markets.

“Eighty-eight percent of our state’s electricity production comes from coal. West Virginia is the nation’s leading coal export, accounting for 40% of coal leaving U.S. borders,” said Chris Hamilton, president of the West Virginia Coal Association. “West Virginia coal exports not only account for half of West Virginia’s total output but also contribute significantly to the U.S. balance of trade.”

Hamilton added the reports align with West Virginia House Bill 2014, including provisions to upgrade and modernize the state’s coal-fired fleet, as well as Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s “50 by 50” energy plan.
