August 3, 2026 - Extreme heat kills more people than any other climate hazard – so said the United Nations last month, in a very confident post that lasted about as long as it took our team to pull up the actual mortality data. (Narrator: it does not, in fact, kill more people than any other climate hazard.) Welcome to your July Climate Fact Check – CFACT's monthly rundown of the claims the media and the UN threw at you last month, and the facts they hoped you wouldn't check. This is the DO-tank difference: we don't just complain about bad reporting, we go line by line and correct the record – with the receipts. Here's what we caught this month:   *** The UN claimed extreme heat is the deadliest "climate hazard" on the planet. The real numbers – from the UN's own preferred data sources – show extreme cold kills about 1.3 times more people every year than extreme heat does. But what the UN also left out is that heat deaths aren't some unstoppable force of nature. They're overwhelmingly preventable – with a 100-year-old invention called air conditioning. The U.S. has it in over 90% of homes. Heat deaths here have dropped roughly 90% over the past century. Simple. So why is Europe still burying people over a heat wave? Keep reading. *** Bloomberg ran a story warning that "climate inflation" is coming for your grocery bill – extreme heat and drought are supposedly "decimating harvests." Meanwhile, actual UN data tells a different story. The UN's own Food and Agriculture Organization reports that world cereal production hit an all-time high in 2024 – 2.854 billion tonnes, the third record year running. Its latest forecast has 2025/26 production climbing even higher, to 2.911 billion tonnes.   Global hunger has been declining for decades even as the world population has grown by billions, and CO? is such effective plant food that doubling it boosts yields by around a third in controlled studies. Someone forgot to check with the crops.   *** The Washington Post insisted the June European heatwave was "virtually impossible" without climate change – courtesy of a rapid-fire "attribution study" that treats weather like a crime scene and works backward to the conclusion it wanted. The actual cause was an "omega block" in the jet stream – hot Saharan air trapped and compressed under a ridge – basic atmospheric physics that has nothing to do with your car's tailpipe. Global average temperature actually fell during the same stretch. If a warmer planet caused it, someone should tell the planet. *** And Futurism (by way of The Guardian) breathlessly reported a "huge heatwave" in Antarctica. What they didn't mention: while one localized patch on the peninsula got briefly less frigid, the South Pole hit -100.5°F that same month – its coldest reading since 2023 – and Antarctica had already set a new world record low for March. A "heatwave" on a continent setting cold records is a strange kind of crisis. Add it up: four major claims, four fact-checks, zero survivors. Meanwhile the UN wants to lecture you about your gas stove. >>> Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney – no climate skeptic, a former UN climate finance envoy – just went on camera and called Trudeau's old emissions plan "too expensive" and "too divisive," greenlit new pipelines, scrapped the consumer carbon tax, and admitted Canada's emissions are going up under his watch. He says he's still committed to Net Zero "over time" – but when the man who used to run global climate finance for the UN says the old plan wasn't "sustainable," even he can't spin that as good news for Climate Crisis Inc.
