Canada: Saskatchewan Invests in the Future of Coal Power Generation to Protect Jobs and Energy Autonomy
August 17, 2026 - The Government of Saskatchewan has made a strategic decision to invest in the future of coal-fired power generation, extending the operational life of key units across the province. This bold direction is not just about energy—it’s about sovereignty, sustainability, and the livelihoods of thousands of Saskatchewan families.
In response to the federal mandate to phase out coal-fired electricity by 2030, Saskatchewan is exercising its constitutional right to manage its own natural resources and energy policy. Supported by Crown Investments Corporation (CIC), SaskPower, and the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), the province is pursuing a long-term vision where coal remains a reliable pillar of the energy mix well beyond 2050.
Strategic Reinvestment in Coal Infrastructure
The comprehensive revitalization plan focuses on modernizing provincial generation assets while maintaining high environmental and reliability standards:
- Refurbishment of Boundary Dam Unit 4: Extending operational longevity and maximizing generating efficiency.
- 1,500 MW Capacity Extension: Securing reliable baseload power to protect against supply shortfalls and price volatility.
- Advanced Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS): Deploying leading CCS technology to mitigate emissions and meet environmental targets.
- Responsible Resource Management: Balancing uninterrupted energy access with practical, realistic environmental stewardship.
Protecting Jobs and Strengthening Communities
This effort is about more than infrastructure—it’s about people. The coal industry has long been a pillar of Saskatchewan’s economy, providing stable, unionized jobs and supporting local communities. Preserving coal means preserving the economic well-being of towns like Estevan, where UMWA Local 7606 members continue to be the backbone of Saskatchewan’s power workforce.
With strong backing from the United Mine Workers of America and SaskPower, the province is ensuring that workers and their communities are not left behind.
A Vision for a Sustainable, Prosperous Saskatchewan
- Strengthen Saskatchewan’s long-term energy independence and local grid reliability.
- Stimulate local economies, preserve union wages, and foster sustainable community job creation.
- Expand the province’s global position as a leader in commercial Carbon Capture and clean coal technologies.
