U.S. Coal Exports Strengthen as Domestic Coal Generation Declines
August 18, 2026 - U.S. coal exports are proving resilient in 2026 even as coal-fired generation continues to decline at home. Stronger metallurgical coal shipments and improving international demand have lifted the export outlook, while higher global coal prices and gas-to-coal switching in Europe and Asia are providing additional support to steam coal trade. Total exports increased 32% year-on-year in June.
