August 28, 2026 - Last year, our Young Workers Initiative Committee and Women’s Caucus joined forces to create the UWUA Adopt-a-School program. The program began by hosting school supply drives and career days for local elementary, middle, and high schools, to ensure students would be well-prepared for their school days and beyond.

Now in its second year, Adopt-a-School is expanding its reach. Local 132 in California has added new partner schools to their program and introduced new activities for the students. They recently hosted a mock interview day at Montclair High School, helping students with their resumés and interview skills. They’ve brought utility equipment like gas meters to schools to give kids a hands-on look at potential future career opportunities. The group has also started participating in Read Across America events, distributing books and reading to students.

Adopt-a-School is bringing much-needed community connection and career development to local schools. Now, they’re looking to expand. If you and your local are interested in partnering with a school and getting involved, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your leadership!
