September 3, 2026 - Liebherr has expanded its crawler excavator lineup with the debut of three new Generation 8 machines in the 50-tonne class: the R 948 G8, R 952 G8 and R 958 G8. Introduced at steinexpo 2026, the models are designed for applications ranging from general earthmoving to quarrying, extraction and demanding mining operations.

Each excavator has been configured for a different range of operating requirements. The R 948 G8 is primarily aimed at earthmoving work and features an LC undercarriage, application-specific equipment choices and an optimized powertrain designed to lower fuel use while maintaining performance.

The R 952 G8 is positioned as the most versatile of the three, offering several undercarriage and equipment configurations along with additional engine power to accommodate a wide variety of jobs and operating environments.

At the heavier-duty end of the lineup, the R 958 G8 is engineered for demanding extraction and mining work. It is available with an S-HD undercarriage, mass-excavation equipment and specialized configurations suited to high-production applications.

Durability and Easier Maintenance

Liebherr designed the new machines for extended service in challenging conditions, incorporating reinforced components constructed from high-strength steel and steel castings. The added structural strength is intended to improve durability and help maximize machine availability.

Maintenance access has also been a focus. Service platforms and access points have been designed to make routine work easier and safer, while an automatic central lubrication system is integrated with the machines' human-machine interface.

Hydraulic and Efficiency Technology

All three excavators use Liebherr's Positive Control hydraulic system, which is designed to provide quick, accurate machine movements.

The models also incorporate several operator-assistance technologies. Liebherr Power Efficiency, or LPE, is designed to optimize machine operation and can reduce fuel consumption by as much as 10% without sacrificing productivity.

Bucket Fill Assist automates portions of the bucket-loading process, while the Modetronic system allows machine settings to be adapted to the requirements of different applications.

Integrated Machine Control

The new G8 excavators feature a passive 2D machine-control system developed in cooperation with Leica Geosystems, along with an integrated dynamic weighing system.

Customers can also choose an optional 3D machine-control package featuring semi-automated functions. The technology is intended to increase digging accuracy while helping operators work more efficiently.

Updated Operator Cabin

Liebherr has equipped the three models with its latest emCAB cab and INTUSI human-machine interface. The redesigned operator environment emphasizes ergonomics, straightforward controls and comfort during long working shifts.

Electric joysticks provide precise machine response, while the interface gives operators easier access to machine functions and operating information.

Safety and visibility have also been upgraded. Camera-assistance technology comes standard, while the optional Skyview 360° system provides operators with a bird's-eye view of the surrounding work area.

Additional improvements include safer access platforms and better visibility of fluid levels during routine inspections and servicing.

With the R 948 G8, R 952 G8 and R 958 G8, Liebherr is broadening its heavy crawler excavator range with three machines tailored to different workloads while sharing an emphasis on efficiency, operator assistance, durability and productivity.
