Epiroc's Deep Automation Introduces Seamless Underground-to-Surface Truck Automation With 3D LiDAR Technology
September 4, 2026 - Epiroc is expanding the capabilities of its autonomous underground mine trucks by enabling operation in surface environments, using 3D LiDAR technology for localization, mapping, and obstacle detection. This industry breakthrough enables seamless transitions between underground and surface operations using Deep Automation, paving the way for end-to-end autonomous hauling and dumping cycles
“Trucks are the natural starting point for this technology, given their long operating distances and the fact that their operating cycles often extend from underground production areas to surface dumping locations. By using a common system for automated underground and surface hauling, with advanced obstacle detection, we can scale this solution to other machine types in the future,” says Johannes Mutamba, Global Product Manager Deep Automation – Trucks, at Epiroc’s Underground division.
A live demonstration was held in June 2026 at the recurring customer event Epiroc World Expo, where attendees also witnessed the battery-electric mine truck automatically detecting and stopping for obstacles placed in its path, demonstrating its built-in safety capabilities.
“Surface environments present unique challenges compared to underground operations due to fewer positioning references and changing weather conditions. By moving from traditional 2D sensors to a 3D LiDAR system, we improve environmental awareness and get more reliable positioning.” says Robert Lundh, Automation Specialist at Epiroc’s Underground division.
The introduction of 3D LiDAR localization, mapping, and obstacle detection marks another important step in Epiroc’s ongoing journey to advance truck automation. Following the implementation of 3D ramp visualization in Deep Automation and the automation rollout for the Minetruck MT65 S, it further demonstrates Epiroc’s commitment to accelerating the adoption of safe, productive, and scalable autonomous solutions.
Epiroc World Expo 2026 brought together customers, partners, and industry experts for a multi-day experience focused on the toughest challenges in mining: deeper deposits, lower ore grades, and the increasing demands for safety, sustainability, and efficiency.
