September 7, 2026 - On behalf of all of us here at the UWUA, we’d like to wish you a happy Labor Day. As union workers, this holiday is of course an especially significant one as we look back on the history of labor and ponder where our movement will take us in the future. Speaking of looking ahead, President Slevin’s message to members in our latest issue of The Utility Worker Magazine is particularly apt as we celebrate Labor Day. President Slevin writes about the importance of union apprenticeships and training the next generation:  “Every role across the utility sector matters. Our members demonstrate exceptional work ethic and teamwork to get the job done right and safely.  Regardless of whether or not you’re a control room operator maintaining system reliability, a customer service or call center representative helping consumers navigate challenges, a field worker responding to emergencies and restoring service or technical and support staff ensuring operations run smoothly, your work is important and impactful.      What unites us is more than the work we do. It is our commitment to one another. The knowledge we share, the skills we pass on, and the support we provide our fellow members are what make our union strong. Training is an investment in the next generation of utility workers and an investment in a stronger labor movement.”  The role of unions in society has never been more vital. We hope you’ll take this day to celebrate the part we all play in the labor movement, and to think about how you will contribute to creating the next generation of strong union workers.
