When Your Hands Stop Listening: 

Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS)

  
Numb fingers. A tingling that doesn't go away by morning. Fingertips that turn pale and cold, even indoors.

These are early warning signs of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) — a hazard tied directly to the vibrating tools that are standard equipment across mining. Think jackleg drills, rock drills, chipping hammers and grinders.

Vibration is often measured in m/s² — short for "meters per second squared," the standard unit for how hard and fast something is shaking.

Think of it as a tool's "shake score": the higher the number, the harder and faster it's rattling your hands. Example — gravity pulls on you at about 10 m/s². But a jackleg drill hitting 25 m/s² is shaking your hands more than twice that hard, non-stop, for as long as your hand is on the trigger.

NIOSH research estimates roughly 100,000 U.S. miners are exposed to vibration from pneumatic drills, and an estimated 144,000 workers across the U.S. and Canada report HAVS symptoms. This isn't rare - it's underreported.
  • A jackleg drill can put out up to 25 m/s² — several times the recognized daily limit.
  • Recognized safety benchmarks set that daily limit at 2.5 m/s² (start reducing exposure) to 5.0 m/s² (daily safe maximum), averaged over an 8-hour shift.
  • At typical jackleg drill output, an operator can reach that daily limit in under an hour of continuous trigger time.

Where MSHA fits in:  MSHA addresses hand-arm vibration through its general physical-agent and ergonomic-hazard standards (30 CFR Parts 56/57), rather than a single stand-alone number the way Part 62 sets specifically for noise.

Either way, the damage to your hands and arms is cumulative and, once symptoms set in, largely irreversible. So prevention is the only real strategy.

What reduces exposure:
  • Track your actual trigger time, not just the length of your shift. Exposure is all about the total minutes you spend drilling.
  • Rotate operators between high- and low-vibration tasks throughout the shift.
  • Keep tools maintained. Worn bearings and bits increase vibration output.
  • Choose well-balanced tools. Anti-vibration gloves help only a little and shouldn't replace exposure-time controls.
  • Report any tingling or numbness in your hands or arms early. HAVS caught early is far more manageable.
If your hands go numb before the shift is over, that's your body trying to tell you there's a real, controllable hazard right there. Start to do something to limit your exposure as soon as possible, and stay on top of it every day.
