September 18, 2026 - The EPA is rolling back emissions limits on coal- and gas-fired power plants that the Biden Administration put into effect.

The EPA said the rule would have driven up energy costs, making the rollback a relief for some power companies and consumers.

However, experts cited by the Los Angeles Times warn it could add billions of tons of emissions.

Utilities like Otter Tail Power note that alternative technologies like carbon capture are not yet sufficiently developed.

“We think that right now it’s just not readily available if you will, as sort of a best system of emission reduction, so very interested in it, continue to explore and research, continue to watch best practices, but until we know that it is that sort of like I said best system of emission reduction, it’s not quite something that we feel is grand scale ready,” said Stephanie Hoff, the communications director for Otter Tail Power.

The EPA said its actions would ensure affordable and reliable energy supplies and drive down the costs of transportation, heating, utilities, farming and manufacturing while boosting national security.
