September 29, 2026 - Coal India Ltd has entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding with Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Ltd to explore setting up a coal gasification-based urea production plant at Sindri in Jharkhand.

According to an exchange filing, the tie-up marks a step forward in assessing alternative, cleaner avenues for coal utilization. Under the framework of the agreement executed on September 29, 2026, both entities will initially focus on evaluating the technical, commercial, and implementation modalities of the proposed venture.

The non-binding pact will also facilitate the preparation of a Preliminary Feasibility Report to gauge the overall project viability before taking the partnership to subsequent stages, the Maharatna company informed the bourses on Tuesday.

The development provided a mild lift to investor sentiment on Dalal Street, with the share price settling at 424.65 on BSE, up 0.72 percent.

The modest uptick comes amid a choppy patch for the mining heavyweight, with the counter clocking gains in only five of its last 12 trading sessions.

In a separate regulatory disclosure, Coal India also notified the exchanges of a leadership reshuffle within its senior management. Consequent upon his appointment as Director (Technical) at Western Coalfields Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Coal India, Dr Anjani Kumar has relinquished charge as Executive Director (Contracts) at Coal India with effect from September 28, 2026, following directives from the Ministry of Coal.
