Australia: Tahmoor Coal-Mine Acquisition Complete; December Restart Planned
October 9, 2026 - Australia’s Tahmoor steelmaking coal mine is preparing to resume longwall production in December following the completion of its acquisition by Golden Energy and Resources (GEAR) and M Resources on October 7, 2026.
GM3 has taken over as the mine’s operator and is increasing activity at the New South Wales site after an extended suspension of operations. Preparations include equipment testing and the phased return and recruitment of employees, with the workforce expected to grow to more than 580.

The planned restart would restore coal production and employment while supporting businesses in the Wollondilly community and surrounding region.
GM3 CEO Peter Baker said the acquisition provides greater certainty for workers and their families following a difficult period. He emphasized that substantial preparation remains before longwall mining can resume safely and efficiently.
Baker said experienced Tahmoor employees will play an important role in testing equipment, preparing the mine and rebuilding its workforce. Beyond the restart, GM3 aims to establish a stable operation that supports long-term employment and regional economic activity.
Tahmoor is targeted to return to full production in December 2026. It joins GM3’s Appin and Dendrobium mines in the company’s steelmaking coal portfolio, expanding its presence across the Wollondilly and Illawarra regions.
