West Virginia Miner Dies at American Eagle Mine; State Investigation Underway

 


October 9, 2026 - Travis Price, a 44-year-old coal miner with 24 years of experience in the industry, died Thursday evening, October 8, at the American Eagle Mine in Kanawha County, West Virginia.

Governor Patrick Morrisey announced Price’s death Friday and offered condolences to his family, friends and fellow miners. The West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatality. The governor’s announcement did not provide details about what caused Price’s death.

Morrisey recognized Price’s years of service to the coal industry and the risks miners face while providing for their families and helping meet the nation’s energy needs. He also asked West Virginians to support Price’s loved ones and the mining community during their loss.

The governor issued the following statement:

“Denise and I are heartbroken to learn of the tragic loss of Travis Price, a coal miner who lost his life at the American Eagle Mine in Kanawha County. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow miners as they mourn this terrible loss.

“Travis dedicated 24 years of his life to an industry that has helped build West Virginia and power our nation. Every day, our coal miners take on difficult and dangerous work to provide for their families and communities. Their dedication and sacrifice deserve our deepest respect and gratitude.

“The West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training is investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragedy. We ask all West Virginians to join Denise and me in praying for Travis’s loved ones and the entire mining community during this difficult time.”
