TeraWulf Redevelops Former New York Coal Plant Site Into AI Data Center Campus
October 18, 2026 - TeraWulf is redeveloping the former Somerset coal-fired power plant site in western New York into a large artificial intelligence data center campus, repurposing industrial land and existing electrical infrastructure.
Located near Lake Ontario in Barker, within the town of Somerset in Niagara County, the Lake Mariner campus is being developed to provide 500 megawatts of gross capacity across six buildings, with plans to expand to approximately 750 megawatts.
TeraWulf, a publicly traded U.S. company listed on Nasdaq under the symbol WULF, develops and operates data centers. The company initially focused on Bitcoin mining and is expanding into facilities that support artificial intelligence and other demanding computing applications.
The redevelopment gives the former coal-generation site a new industrial purpose. The project involves building computing infrastructure rather than restarting coal-fired electricity generation.
TeraWulf is working with Motivair by Schneider Electric to install liquid-cooling systems designed for powerful, closely packed computer servers. The companies say the scalable equipment helps accelerate construction and supports future expansion.
Motivair’s ChilledDoor technology can provide up to 75 kilowatts of cooling at each server rack. Additional equipment distributes coolant within the racks, while a dedicated water-cooling loop serves computers designed for direct liquid cooling.
Coordinating the campus’s electrical systems, cooling equipment and computing infrastructure from the start is intended to shorten deployment schedules and prepare the site for increasingly demanding AI workloads.
