Montana Coal Mine to Supply More Than $100 Million in Coal to Malaysia

October 27, 2026 - A Montana coal mine will supply more than $100 million in coal to Malaysia under a new three-year international energy agreement.

The U.S. Department of Energy announced Monday that Navajo Transitional Energy Company (NTEC) has reached an agreement with Malaysia's TNB Fuel Services to export coal from its Spring Creek Mine in southeastern Montana.

NTEC, a Navajo Nation-owned energy company, will supply coal to TNB Fuel Services, the fuel procurement subsidiary of Malaysia's largest electric utility, Tenaga Nasional Berhad.

Federal officials joined company representatives in Laramie, Wyoming, on Oct. 23 to recognize the agreement.

The deal follows broader U.S.-Malaysia trade commitments announced during President Donald Trump's visit to Kuala Lumpur in October 2025, including plans for $42.7 million in annual U.S. coal sales to TNB Fuel Services.

According to the Department of Energy, the agreement grew out of visits to coal mines in Montana and Wyoming and is part of a broader effort to expand U.S. coal exports and strengthen international energy partnerships.

The department says the agreement is expected to support American coal producers and mining communities while expanding access to international markets.
